Our Story

It began with two strollers.

ALAYA was founded by Yaya Yumak, a single mother who once had $18 to her name and was carried through her hardest year by the generosity of family and strangers.

When she gave her spare stroller away, hundreds of mothers wrote to her — women in crisis with no partner, no family, no one to call. She tried to answer them all alone, and learned that one person is not enough.

The morning she nearly stopped, she walked out her door — and a brand-new bassinet stood on the sidewalk. No note. No owner. She sent it to a mother who had nothing, and dedicated herself to building what she had once needed.

ALAYA was born on a sidewalk.

The moment it began

Into the storm

“The bison is one of the only animals that walks straight into the storm — because it knows that is the fastest way through.”

That is the mother ALAYA was built for.

Accountability

How we hold ourselves to standard

Governance

ALAYA is governed by a board of directors — Yaya Yumak (Founder & Executive Director), Arzu Durmus, and Giovanna Lennis — operating under bylaws and a conflict-of-interest policy.

Financials

We operate on a 100% model with $0 overhead. Every deployment is itemized, and full financial records are available to donors and grantmakers on request.

Privacy & safeguarding

Many mothers we serve are in vulnerable situations. Applications are confidential — we never publish names, faces, or identifying details of recipients or their children without their explicit, documented consent. Where a mother chooses to share her story or appear on camera, it is always by her own decision — confirmed in writing.
